Eddie Carbone is an American-Sicilian man working in Brooklyn. He works as a longshoreman: carrying crates and goods from the ships. He is quite a large man. His job requires him to be strong and a good worker. In other words he is very masculine. He is an ordinary man. He lives with his wife and niece, whom he treats like a daughter, and like all good men should do, he works every day to provide them with enough money to survive on. Eddie is a man’s man. He lives within a close-knit community of Sicilians and is a well respected member of society. Eddie sees himself as a prime example of how a man should act and look. The ending of a view from the bridge is fairly predictable from the beginning as it is hinted at by the narrator Alfieri throughout the first scene until the climax at the end of scene one where it becomes evident to us that a fall is about to occur. Many factors contribute to the tragic downfall of Eddie Carbone. However it is his limited understanding of what it means to be a man that is the most prominent. Eddie’s perception of what it means to be a man is also connected with his views of women. Eddie’s forbidden love for Catherine is also one of the main driving forces behind the tragedy. The downfall of Eddie Carbone may have eventually occurred even without Marco and Rodolpho coming over from Italy as his love for Catherine was unnatural. Marcos strong belief in the Sicilian codes of conduct cause him to fight Eddie. Eddie’s limited understanding of what it means to be a man becomes damaged and challenged during the play, he responds terribly to these and d oesn’t approve when other men do not act as he believes men should. In Alfieri’s opening speech he makes it clear that something bad is about to occur. He says ‘Sat there as powerless as I, and watched it run its bloody course. This one’s name was Eddie Carbone†¦Ã¢â‚¬â„¢ This makes it clear that Eddie too is to follow the fate that something bad, but unstoppable is going to happen. Alfieri, like a narrator in a Greek tragedy, characterizes the chorus in the play and he tells the story and suggests eddies downfall throughout the play. ‘There was a future; there was a trouble that would not go away’. Here Alfieri is explaining that even if Rodolpho and Marco hadn’t arrived, Eddie’s love for Catherine would’ve bought a downfall. Especially seeing as his relationship with Beatrice was becomin... ...ting his name. He says to Marco ‘Now gimme my name!’ Eddie believes that Marco has taken his name. Eddie shouts out to the crowd ‘Maybe he came to apologise to me’. Eddie tries to make the crowd think that it is Marco, who has done wrong by taking Eddie’s name, Marco has damaged Eddie’s pride and Eddie believes he should pay for this. The biggest factor that drives the tragedy is definitely Eddie’s narrowed view of what it means to be a mean. The cousins coming to America only acted as a catalyst for what was bound to happen between the Carbone family as Eddie’s inappropriate love for Catherine would’ve driven them apart eventually. Rodolpho is like a threat to Eddie as he might take Catherine away from him. Eddie not only has stereotypical views on men but on women too. He believes they should look after the house, stay at home and care for their husbands. He sees men as stronger and more authoritative than women. He therefore believes strongly in men having a reputation. This is what finally causes Eddie and Marco to fight, as Eddie wants his name and reputation back. This is how Eddie’s understanding of what it means to be a man leads to his downfall and so drives the tragedy.

To understand the American dream it’s easiest to look back in history at how great historical movements created and shaped the American dream idea. For starters a long time ago around the 30’s, James Truslow Adams, a popular historian, was putting the final touches on the preface to his latest book. It was an interesting time in the life of our nation. Though the crash of 1929 had signaled the beginning of the Great Depression that was to be endured for years to come, there was also a spirit of progress, of possibility.On the day Adams was finishing his manuscript, President Herbert turned on the lights of the newly opened Empire State Building. High hopes amid hard times: the moment matched Adams' thesis in his book, â€Å"The Epic of America† (Meacham 1-4). A history of the nation that was to spread a term not yet in the general lingo in those last years of the reigns of Harding, Coolidge and Hoover. Adams' subject, he wrote, was â€Å"that American dream of a better, richer, and happier life for all our citizens of every rank which is the greatest contribution we have as yet made to the thought and welfare of the world. , (Meacham 1-4). It was not a new thing, this abiding belief that tomorrow would be better than today. â€Å"That dream or hope† (Meacham 1-4). There is no single definition of the American Dream. Different people in the US have a different perception of the idea of American Dream. The history of American Civil War helps people understand the two different views regarding the American Dream. All thirteen colonies of the pre-independence era fought together against the British forces. By the end of the American Revolution however, things had changed.The southern colonies had different views which didn't match with those of the northern states. The northern states were against the tradition of slavery and wanted a federal government to rule the nation. They also favored the growth of industries in America. Southern states on the other hand, wanted a sovereign state for them; they also supported the system of slavery which provided them with cheap labor. Interests of these states lied more in the area of agricultural development as against industrial growth. These clashes and differences in opinions eventually culminated into the Civil War.Today, many Americans have lost their faith in the idea of the American Dream. Again John Muller’s ideas from â€Å"Capitalism, Peace, and the Historical Movement of Ideas†, talks about a great point about the US Government. â€Å"Imperialist policies of the US Government more than the economic crisis are responsible for the occurrence of this situation. Interestingly, the efforts of USA to establish superiority over other countries were perceived as a part of the American Dream by many† (Mueller 169-184). James Field JR. explains the history of war from his book â€Å"History of United States Naval Operations: Korea†.After the for mation of Canada, there was no territory left in North America for the US to expand. Thus, the US turned to the east and supported South Korea against North Korea in its effort to weaken China's influence in the region. After helping South Korea in regaining its territory from North Korea, the US decided to invade North Korea. Chinese authorities warned them against taking any such steps. However, the tensions between these countries rose and eventually the Korean War broke out. A 200,000 strong Chinese army attacked the UN (United Nations) forces which supported the US.Fearing the intervention of USSR, the UN forces retreated back to the south. James Field JR. goes on to conclude â€Å"The reason behind citing these instances is that, in the process of asserting itself as a superpower, America went so far as to suppress the weaker nations. The imperialistic policies of this country have therefore, acted against the very essence of the American Dream i. e. Liberty/freedom. In order for the American Dream to exist and thrive, the US should not only strengthen its economy, but also act as a responsible nation. † This is why the American Dream has and never will be feasible.The Idea of the American Dream has become so prevalent in today’s motto and goals that it is literally ruining people lives. People line up at the proverbial starting line and originate a pissing contest in an attempt to attain degrees, cars and houses at an unreasonable debt, get jobs that we loathe, and max out our credit cards along the way. In the midst of this survival battle, people are keeping their eyes toward what they were all told about attaining the â€Å"dream† that includes a home, family, and acquiring as many things as we can.So why is the American dream so important to everyone if there is no such thing as it? The first myth that America obtains as a nation is that anybody can succeed with hard work. For everyone to succeed with hard work, that would requi re equality of opportunity, which does not exist because opportunity differs based on class and status. The American dream justifies inequality based on social class by your position in class as a fair reflection of what you deserve. Justifying inequality based on ascribed status attributes inequality to a personal trial or defiance in the minority group.James Tueslow Adams states that the American Dream is a dream of a land in which â€Å"life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement. † Too many of us have grown weary and mistrustful of it. It is not a dream of motor cars and high wages merely, but a dream of social order in which each man and each woman shall be able to attain to the fullest stature of which they are innately capable, and be recognized by others for what they are, regardless of the fortuitous circumstances of birth or position.The United States has always been considered a land of equ al opportunities. People from all over the world have migrated to the US, mainly in search of employment and freedom of religion. However, there are many factors responsible for making America a sought-after destination in order to lead a prosperous life. The United States is a nation where the ‘individual', rather than collective population attains ‘center-stage’ in the process of devising policies, making changes, taking up developmental initiatives, etc. Alperovitz, and Thomas 18-23) The youth from the Third World nations have always found USA to be attractive; for them, the socioeconomic conditions back home are in contrast with those found in America. The freedom which can be experienced in America is nowhere to be found. However, there is also a darker side to the American society which needs to be understood. Cope dont Mope In 6th grade I had just finished running laps in my p.e class and since it was my last class of the day i was gonna go change and then wait for my ride to come pick me up. I found a big tree at the front of the school so i was just gonna lay there while I waited because it was pretty hot that day so it was nice to be in the shade. I was so tired after my run that I actually ended up closing my eyes for a bit and i didnt open them until I heard someone walking up to me. When I opened my eyes, all I saw was someone in a grey hoodie throwing a punch at my face. This was nothing new though, this was just the most recent attack in a year full of bullying at all that bullying put me in a really bad spot that took me years to recover from. I had to figure out how to cope with the bullying and basically had to prove to myself that I was worth it. I was bullied from 5th grade up to 7th grade and a little into 8th but by the end of 8th grade i had grown taller than everyone else so no one dared to mess with me anymore but those years of abuse left a big mark on me and my mental health. It actually got so bad that the latter part of 6th grade and the early part of 7th grade when my family would leave for work or school and i was home alone i would actually get my dads handgun load it and put it to my head and sit there until someone comes home then I would hide it again. I did that until i heard two quotes that at least got me to stop contemplating suicide. I have no idea who said them or where i heard them but they absolutely changed my life they are â€Å"Suicide is a permanet solution to an impermanent problem† and â€Å"suicde does not get rid of your pain, it only takes it and gives it to someone else†. The second quote was the one that really saved my life because imagine my dad coming home and finding me dea d in his bed, with his gun in my hand. I know my dad and he would feel like he failed me and our family and I could not put my family through all of that. It wasnt until I was out of highschool when I really got past that stuff. It was a long and bumpy road though, i lost a lot of people I cared about because i came up with this tough guy alter ego to try and counteract everything that had happened but all that did was isolate me even further because i kept pushing people away so i needed a new way to cope. To add to all the mental and physical abuse I suffered in middle school immediately after middle school my dad ended up moving me away from all my friends, away from the people that made me feel safest. I went into my freshman year of highschool completely alone again so I had no one to turn to when things got bad. About half way through the semester I had started talking to people and actually making friends there was even this girl Dhalila that I really liked who I was gonna go see a movie with but we ended up moving again but this time to arizona. Instead of moving from one town to another like before this time it was to a completely different state so once again I was alone but this time I was alone in a 100 degree desert with nothing to comfort me but cactuses (which dont give great hugs I ended up finding out). So once again I have to put myself out there and make new friends but this time it was way faster because I met this girl Julie who actually introduced me to all her fri ends and one of those people actually ended up becoming my girlfriend but im hoping shell say yes when I ask her to be my fiance. So I hang out with julies friends all the way until the end of the school year then BOOM I switch schools, I dont end up moving but i end up switching schools so once again I have to make new friends even though by now im old enough to have a phone so I keep in contact with some of the people from my last school. But by now I had started pushing people away with this fake me i created and I hated that I kept doing it. I mean it was so bad that I would ask a girl out and when she rejected me i wouldnt get sad i would get mad like how dare she not want to date me. And it was awful. So now it is my sophomore year of highschool now and im doing a little bit better because the friends I made at my new school actually ended up getting me into sports. At first it was just playing catch or something at lunch but eventually they got me to try out for the football team and I liked it. I made the team as a wide receiver because im tall and can run fast. I loved the camaraderie between the guys on the team and the lights shining on the field when we played at night. Those games where the happiest id been in a very long time but after about 10 games it happened. I went up for a catch and as I was up in the air a defender from the opposing team hit me right in the chest as I was coming down and actually broke one of my ribs and put my rib into my lung which ended up puncturing it. After that I was in the hospital and bed ridden for weeks and even after i could get up I could barely move or breathe which put me back into that hole i had just climbed out of and I felt lost a gain. I thought that football was gonna be my thing, that was gonna be my thing that got me past my depression and heck maybe id even make a career out of it. But sadly it was just a nice escape for a few months but then I lost it. In December of my sophomore year I met this girl cayce through my friend Julie who I started talking to over Facebook and really quick it felt like there was some kind of connection like it seemed as though we were the same person. After only 4 or 5 months and prompting from Cayces friend I took the leap and asked her out and to my surprise she actually said yes. Ever since that day my life has been on an uphill climb even though in between sophomore and junior year I moved back to California leaving my girlfriend in Arizona. She was the one that truly got me past all that stuff that happened in 6th grade. So nearly 6 years later I finally started recovering and it was because we would always talk about our dream dates or dream house which allowed the real me to come out. Before her I had that tough guy alter ego that would say mt perfect date is sex and mt perfect house is an expensive one but with Cayce i was able to let my walls down and really go into detail on stuff and be me. F or once in years i was able to be me and I loved it. So I guess this whole paper and my whole journey boils down to be yourself no matter what people say, no matter what people do if you be you then you can do anything you want. I am about to finish my first full year of college and in only one more year I will have 3 associates degrees all because my girlfriend and my friends helped me see who the real me is. Plus this is my way of flipping off all the people that bullied me years ago, this is my way of proving them wrong.
